Welcome to the September edition of Cobb2020's monthly newsletter, the Cobb2020 Voice. This month is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. In Cobb County alone, 24% of children are considered obese, leaving these kids at risk for grown-up health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke and cancer. But there are opportunities to make positive changes every day that work toward fighting of these serious conditions and improving the health of your entire family. Below are some simple and easy ways to put focus on your family's health and ways to integrate healthy living. Fruits & Veggies Month!
September is also National Fruit and Veggie Month, so no excuses this month – add these health-friendly foods into your shopping bag. Working nutritious fruits and vegetables into your daily diet doesn't have to be a challenge. Learn how to make shopping for fruits and vegetables easy and affordable with these 10 Smart Shopping Tips!
Additionally, the Cobb County Extension is working with the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County to form a council of area community gardens to connect Cobb's gardeners together! The Cobb Community Garden Council will become active this month and is being formed to share ideas and information among all community gardens in Cobb County and its cities that wish to participate.

Take Steps to a Healthier You with the Walk Cobb Initiative!
Walking is one of the easiest ways to get exercise and can improve your health while being part of a fun social group. Join Walk Cobb, a collaborative walking initiative focusing on helping Cobb County's youth and adults embrace healthier lifestyles using the Walk Georgia program to record and track your physical activity.
Gather friends and start a team or do it on your own. Either way, challenge yourself to take steps to a healthier you. Registration starts on October 1 - 9, and then you can getting moving from October 1 - November 23.

Learn to Create a Healthy Plate
There are simple actions you can take to make sure your family maintains a healthy weight. It's important to focus on not only how much you're eating but also what you're eating!
Learn how to build a healthy plate with the five major food groups that are the foundation for a healthy diet: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy. Eating nutritious meals in right-size portion can be tricky, but learn the secrets for building a healthy plate here.

Join the Cobb2020 Photovoice project for the chance to win an iPod Touch, iPad Mini or Amazon gift cards. Photographs are a powerful way to share a person's values, thoughts and messages, and we want to hear your perspective on the growing health problem of obesity in our community through photography.
Cobb participants will go out into the community from September 9 - October 3, 2013 and capture photographic images that represent their thoughts on obesity and illustrate, in their opinion what causes it, why it exists, why it's a community problem and examples the community can take to reduce it.

Attend the Live Well Marietta Kick-Off Event on Saturday!
WellStar Health System and the City of Marietta invite you to the Live Well Marietta Kick-Off event at the Marietta Farmer's Market on Saturday, September 7, 2013. This family-friendly event is aimed at strengthening the health and wellness of area residents and will connect citizens and local businesses through a common interest in healthy living. The kick-off event will feature yoga, a cooking demonstration, health-education booths, a physical activity demonstration and the following free screenings: cholesterol and glucose fingersticks and blood pressure screenings.
