The latest initiative from Cobb2020 aims to provide fresh produce to food deserts in Austell area and Marietta
Atlanta – May 28, 2015 - Cobb2020 will launch its second year of the successful Farm Fresh Market campaign starting June 4 to combat Cobb County’s food desert problem. The markets will supply fresh fruits and vegetables to residents in Austell on Six Flags Drive and at a new Franklin Road location in Marietta.
The Farm Fresh Markets will be open on Saturdays in Marietta and on Thursdays in Austell to provide, “increased access to fresh fruit and vegetables to a population that does not have access to a free standing grocery store,” said Becky Shipley, Executive Director of McCleskey-East Cobb & Northeast Cobb YMCA and Cobb2020 Steering Committee Chair, who is spearheading the initiative on Cobb2020’s Healthy Lifestyles team. “The produce will be offered at a significantly reduced price as well to make it more accessible.”
Thanks to community partners at the Atlanta Community Food Bank, the markets will offer fruit and vegetable bags for $5 a piece and customers can choose from 15 items of healthy produce. The Cobb County UGA Extension Office will work to provide nutrition education at the markets to residents.
“The Cobb2020 Farm Fresh Markets are one great example of community partners working together to support our health priorities in Cobb County,” said Lisa Crossman, Deputy Director Cobb & Douglas Public Health and Cobb2020 Steering Committee Vice Chair.
Cobb2020’s Farm Fresh Market is not only expected to increase access to healthier foods, but also assess and study how behaviors and eating habits have changed. “Low-income neighborhoods have a higher obesity rate than other areas, so by giving access to healthy food, we want to be able to increase healthy eating habits and also see how a person’s lifestyle may have changed due to access,” said Shipley.
